I read 12 books in April.

The surprise was THE EARL'S PRIZE by Nicola Cornick, it was so good. The hero is a wonderful rake, which after I read LORD OF FIRE both books are similiar that the heroes are rakes and the heroines are goody-two-shoes.

Had to watch tonight's Survivor All Star....they do love to play with the knives! Jeff isn't putting out their flame at the end he is making sure the knife in the back is properly installed.

Shi-Ann left tonight but she got to say her piece and I think she is correct.....does Boston Rob have Amber wrapped around his finger or has she made sure he saved her even thought she was on another team, he does all the dirty work deciding who is voted out next and he keeps her warm at night. Go Amber!

Watch out next week, she is going to sit back and watch the men start banging their chest like he-men! Jenna will go because she can't keep her trap shut, she needs to take a page from Amber's book.
This reviewer summed up my thoughts to the T about LORD OF ICE.
http://www.likesbooks.com/jenny125.html

The part about fighting 15 men at one time had me laughing.
Well, it took a week but I finally finished the twin's story LORD OF FIRE & LORD OF ICE. I can say I honestly enjoyed Lucien much more than Damien, didn't even picture them as twins in my mind they are so different. The titles fit the twins perfectly Lucien is fire, hot, sexy while Damien is ice, cold, remote, didn't show up for his own book.

Lucien was bad, a real bad boy.....oh,how I love a bad boy.....Alice, his heroine was good, a real goody two shoes. This couple had sparks, when he frisked her for weapons I held my breath all the way up her thigh.

Now Miranda seem too much of a teenager playing an adult to me, leaving this story very flat. The best part of the book is seeing Robert, Bel, Lucien and Alice. Meeting Billy Blade who is the hero in LADY OF DESIRE, which is next up for me.

I will say there was a surprise in LORD OF ICE.....on the New Year's Eve when the fireworks are going off and Damien is hiding in the closet, how Miranda takes his mind off of rockets exploding took me by surprise. LOL

Anyway, I gave LORD OF ICE a C because he is in good family.

The powerful tale of a hero tempted by the one woman he is forbidden to love....

Damien Knight, the earl of Winterley, is proud, aloof, and tormented by memories of war. Though living in seclusion, he is named guardian to a fellow officer's ward. Instead of the young homeless waif he was expecting, however, Miranda FitzHubert is a stunning, passionate beauty who invades his sanctuary and forces him back into society. Struggling to maintain honor and self-control, Damien now faces an even greater threat: desire.

A bold, free spirit, Miranda has witnessed the darkest depths of Damien's soul -- and has seen his desperate need for love. But before she can thaw his unyielding heart, she must endure a terrifying nightmare of her own....

Week in Review

I started reading Carolyn Davidson's COLORADO COURTSHIP but it wasn't working for me so I put in down to start LORD OF FIRE, the best book of the week.

A FAMILY FOR GILLIAN (Rated B-)
Catherine Blair (2)

Carlton was still grieving to much to even feel comfortable looking at Gillian after they married. The children hated her, mostly the oldest daughter. She easily won of the baby, Katie that never knew her mother but when Gillian tried to do anything for her, Carlton reminded her she wasn't Katie's mother.

LORD OF FIRE (Rated B+)

Beautiful, innocent, Alice Montague finds herself at the mercy of scandalous Lord Lucien. But as he begins his slow seduction to corrupt her virtue, Alice glimpses a man tormented by his own choices, a man who promises her nothing except his undeniable passion....

I just never felt anything for either Sinjin or Clarissa. Sinjin spent his time in the book grieving the loss of Sarah (THE WEDDING GAMBLE heroine). She had married another in a MOC while Sinjin was away at war and he couldn't get back into time to stop the wedding. Sarah is happily married with children and this all took place over 4 years ago.

Clarissa is beautiful and the star of the ton, she is a bit spoiled but she when she flirts she doesn't hurt. Sinjin sees her as an arrogant, spoiled society lady. He is determined to marry a rich middle class woman who will know her place. He starts picking out women. The author just never gives Clarissa and Sinjin many scenes together to let the sparks fly so Sinjin can only see Clarissa and want her.

The seem to fall in love with each from afar....he was with a rich middle class woman when Clarissa realized she had lost him because he was about to ask the other women to marry him in a MOC.

I loved THE WEDDING GAMBLE so I will be trying another of her books.

This weekend is LORD OF ICE by Gaelen Foley, I've ordered LADY OF DESIRE (their sister's book) waiting for THE DEVIL TAKES A BRIDE coming out in May.

Thursday, April 22, 2004

I am stuck on another Carolyn Davidson's book......COLORADO COURTSHIP. I am about half way and it just isn't interesting me at all even with its wagon train theme.

I picked up 3 books yesterday while in Walmart.
THE LOVE OF A STRANGER by Anna Jeffery (loved her first book THE LOVE OF A COWBOY)

MOMMY SAID GOODBYE by Janice Kay Johnson
A COWBOY SUMMER by Debra Salonen

Then I've pulled Gaelen Foley's LORD OF FIRE and LORD OF ICE to read soon and ordered LADY OF DESIRE.
I read Gaelen Foley's newsletter, it had one of the best teasers by an author I've ever read for DEVIL TAKES A BRIDE due out in May. Now I've got to read this series.

I am hoping something will spark some interest before I go for chemo this morning. I have to sit and wait about 2 hours, good reading time. Maybe I will just toss all the books in the air, the one closest to the door I take with me!

Mad ask me 3 questions:
1. Did you get out of working today?

Nope, had to work my fanny off.....at least it didn't pop like the JLo look alike fanny!!! LOL

2. What is your favorite thing to do with your hubby and kids?

Eat! I love to go out to eat with the whole family sit around a table chat and visit. We use to do that at home but I stopped cooking and they come and go to much.

3. Who do you think will win on Survivor? *BG*

I hate to say this but it looks like Boston Rob...if not him then maybe Amber.
This past weekend only made it through one book and it wasn't that good. I've enjoyed some of Ms. Justiss past books but this one just fell flat for me.

THE PROPER WIFE

Blurb:
A thrifty, industrious, WHOLESOME bride! Certainly not an exotic aristocrat like Clarissa Beaumont, who set trends and dazzled suitors with equal passion. A more UNSUITABLE wife St. John Sandiford found impossible to imagine! Why then couldn't he get Clarissa out of his mind -- or his heart?

Though Sinjin Sandiford was rightly called "hero," he could sometimes fall short of "gentleman," Lady Beaumont fumed. Why, the cad had refused her help in making an advantageous match -- yet still he managed to stir the most UNSEEMLY feelings within her...!

***Thoughts
I just never felt anything for either Sinjin or Clarissa. Sinjin spent his time in the book grieving the loss of Sarah (THE WEDDING GAMBLE). Clarissa is about 21 and the bell of the ton, she is beautiful and a bit spoiled by all. But she is very kind hearted, she flirts but doesn't hurt.
Sinjin dislikes her on site and sparks fly when they are together. But the author just didn't give them enough scenes for the sparks to turn to fire and into passion. The seem to fall in love with each from afar....he was with a rich middle class woman when Clarissa realized she had lost him because he was about to ask the other women to marry him in a MOC.
Sinjin was slower, nearly the last chapter.

In the comments I would like you to ask 3 questions, no more.
Then go to you journal and allow readers to ask you 3 questions.
Should be interesting to see answers. Oh, give you link to you blog.
Here are a few books I read Thursday and Friday both regencies. I am not sure what I will read this weekend but I've enjoyed these short regencies so I might check the pile for one more.

A FAMILY FOR GILLIAN
Catherine Blair (2)
10/2001
Rom/H-Regency

Can a marriage of convenience lead to a lifetime of love?

AN UNEXPECTED BRIDE

Miss Gillian Harwell was sure that getting caught in a compromising position would thwart her family's scheme to marry her off for money. However, her plan worked all too well -- with her reputation ruined, her only recourse was to wed Viscount Carlton Avery, a lonely widower with three unruly children. And it wasn't long before Gillian found her attempts to help her new family sparking a most surprising romance....

A DEVOTED GROOM

Carlton had agreed to this hasty arrangement strictly for his family's sake. He never expected that his new wife would be so spirited and outspoken. Nor did he imagine that her caring ways would not only work wonders on his children, but would also break through his carefully cultivated reserve, provoking a passion he thought long dead. Now, amid past hurts and misunderstandings, he must prove his love to Gillian -- for if she leaves his home, she takes his heart with her....

****Thoughts (Rated B-)
Carlton was still grieving to much to even feel comfortable looking at Gillian after they married. The children hated her, mostly the oldest daughter. She easily won of the baby that never knew her mother but when Gillian tried to do anything for her, Carlton reminded her she wasn't Katie's mother.
Gillian is very strong, I would have been bawling my eyes out wanting to leave and return to my family. Everyone compared Gillian to Elizabeth (deceased wife) and found her lacking.
After a while they settled in to comfortabel routine but I never saw a romance develope in the book....it just happened towards the end.
The author needed more intimate time between Gillian and Carlton, she spent more time with the children than him and he spend most of his time either on horseman thinking of Elizabeth or visiting her grave.
Gillian's strong character is what moved this book. BTW: the BOB is totally wrong, Carlton didn't love Gillian till the end and I never saw his heart! LOL

THE EARL's PRIZE
Nicola Cornick
11/2002
Rom/H-Georgian/Regency
HH684

London, 1792
WILL THE RAKE WIN A WIFE?

Miss Amy Bainbridge is a lady of honor, but when she finds herself the recipient of a surprise windfall her whole life changes! Now Amy can not only re-enter society, she's also secured the attention of London's most notorious gambler and rake!

Joss, Earl of Tallant, is everything Amy despises in a man, but she's utterly intrigued by him. She's certain Joss isn't attracted by her fortune, so why is this renowned rake pursuing her with such intent? Amy's finding his amorous attentions all but impossible to resist...!

*** Thoughts
THE EARL'S PRIZE is a great book. I gave it an A-.

The only reason I gave it an A- is Amy was just too damn sweet sometimes. I thought she must have visited the pastry shop for her daily dose of goodness.

I just want to hit her upside the head when she was giving her money away? I did like when Joss was so surprised when she ask him if the lottery ticket was his. He couldn't believe she wanted to give the money back to the real ticket holder.
I don't think Joss ever understood why Amy hated gamblers, maybe if he had seen where she lived in Whitechapel, not having food, coal while her father had fine clothes, food, drink and gambled. Her brother Richard never lived that life because they always made sure the heir was in school while Amy and her mother starved.
I loved watching Amy's mother tell the servants only one bisquits per person when someone came to tea, then how she didn't want more than one candle in a room. Her mother was a very interesting character.

His sister Juliana has her own book WAYWARD WIDOW, it is this month's HH. How in the world can Cornick redeem that b*tch??!!
I am going to have to read it to see how she does it, the hero is Martin Davencourt a childhood friend of Juliana's. She is a widow and she took at least one lover (her mother's ex) that we know about. Clive must be old enough to be her father if her mother left with him when Juliana was just a baby.

The second book in the series I don't remember the H/H.....I thought it was going to be Amanda's story but BYRON list the heroine as Lady Annis Wyncherley and the hero as Lord Adam Ashwick.

I had to go to the hospital to have blood drawn again, so I took LONGSHADOWN'S WOMAN by Bronwyn Williams to read while I waited my turn. I finished it last night, hummmm it started out good but kind of bogged down towards the later half.

Here is the blurb:
LONGSHADOW's WOMAN
Bronwyn Williams
3/2001
Rom/H/I-Frontier
HH553

HALF-BREED LONER

Jonah Longshadow had never walked an easy road. Now the hands of destiny had yanked him from a white man's prison and set him down on a hardscrabble farm, paired with a woman whose quiet courage and gentle kindness filled him with dreams that a man like him had no business dreaming....

Two dollars' worth of trouble -- that's what Carrie Adams had probably bought herself when she paid Jonah Longshadow's freedom. But she needed strong hands to help her tend her land, and this mountain of a man seemed made to order. The only thing she hadn't counted on was her heart entering into the bargain.

*** Thoughts

I loved in the beginning when Carrie is trying to get the mule to go to town, I was giggling as she had to cuss like a sailor like her husband or the mule wouldn't move. Jonah Longshadow is a very proud man, he stands up to Carrie and even as frightened as she is of Indians, she doesn't back down to his stares. He doesn't speak to her or let her know he can speak English but Ms. Williams lets us hear his snappy comebacks. They are a hoot.

As the attraction builds for both Carrie and Jonah, in walks her very abusive husband. This is were the story took a turn that lost me. I would have enjoyed it much more if the husband had just been dead! LOL

I rated the book C+, but not a keeper.

Two of my reading buddies have recommended THE EARL'S PRIZE by Nicola Cornick, I think I will take it with this afternoon when I go for chemo.

Wednesday, April 14, 2004

Picked up a few today:
COLORADO COURTSHIP by Carolyn Davidson
THE EARL'S PRIZE by Nicola Cornick
ROCKY MOUNTAIN MARRIAGE by Debra Lee Brown
YOUR WICKED WAYS by Eloisa James

I don't know how Eloisa James is going to redeem Rees and turn him into a hero I can love but I bought the book anyway.
I finished the "B" author challenge at CozyRomanceReaders@yahoogroups.com last night.
It only took me about 3 hours from start to finish. This might be my favorite Mary Burton book, I haven't found one that I rated below a B.
Her heroes start out alpha and mellow down a bit but still retain that lovable alpha quality.
Ms. Burton's writing flows evenly and doesn't drag or bog down in the middle. She keeps her secondary characters small with the main focus on the h/h. I really noticed this after the last book I read.

Who is your "B" author?
I choose Mary Burton

Is it a new to you author?
No

What are you reading?
THE LIGHTKEEPER's WOMAN
Mary Burton

Theme: Reunited, Outcast

North Carolina, 1884

Their grand passion had burned too brightly to survive. But faced with wedding another, Alanna Patterson was determined to reignite any smoldering embers of desire Caleb Pitt might still harbor for her. Would her brawny captain, now a solitary lighthouse keeper, rescue her from a sea of regrets? Or had tragedy both public and private sunk any hopes for a lasting love?

Caleb Pitt had once believed love was eternal as the sea, for Alanna Patterson had promised him FOREVER. But despite her vow, she'd left him to drown in disgrace. Now, years later, she'd reappeared on a storm-tossed wave, beautiful as a siren... and just as seductive!

What are your thoughts on the book?
I loved it. In the prologue Alanna and Caleb are so in love, planning to marry in just a few weeks. They've already had passionate sex aboard his ship several times and can't keep their hands off each other. Then the story starts 2 years later and they both almost hate each other and feel that the other betrayed them.

The mystery of what happened pulled me in right away. Alanna is delivering a box to Caleb as her father wishes, after he committed suicide. She is about to marry another man but first she has to see Caleb who now lives in a lighthouse off the Caroline coast in solitude.

One thing I really liked about the book is how both Alanna and Caleb grew up during the 2 years apart. She was a spoiled society girl and he was an invincible ship captain. When their world blow apart they didn't handle it very well but as time went on the both realized what was important and what was just window dressing, especially Alanna.

I also love a book that the hero fights for the heroine's love...he had it once and he is going to get it again no matter what. I think that is what I like about most reunited stories.
I also love lighhouse keeper stories and even North Caroline coast stories, like Bronwyn Williams books.

Will you buy other books by this author?
She is an autobuy for me, I have all of her books on my keeper shelf.
I rated this book B+ and would highly recommend her.

A few months ago I subscribed to Harlequin Super Romances, April was my first shippment. HS-1194 FATHER BY CHOICE by M.J. Rodgers, HS-1195 A FAMILY OF HER OWN by Brenda Novak, HS-1198 JOHN RILEY's GIRL by Inglath Cooper, & HS-1199 FOR THE SAKE OF HIS CHILD by Bonnie K. Winn. I've read two so far.

FATHER BY CHOICE (Rated C-)
M.J. Rodgers
4/2004
Rom/C HS-1194

Emily Barrett wants a baby in her life --- not a husband.

And that's the reason she went to a sperm bank. Through some detective work she's able to work out who the donor is, but she doesn't ever plan to reveal to Dr. Brad Winslow that he's about to become a father.

Yet when the two are forced to work together to solve a century-old mystery with a modern-day twist, Emily begins to wonder if she should revise her life plan.

***Thoughts

The story starts out just fine, but then the author put so many secondary characters in both the present and past I lost count about half way. Emily and Brad got lost in between hunting for the lost time capsule, the 100 year old body found with the time capsule, and other towns people's family present and past history.

The story is set up with an artificial inseminated baby, Brad's donated sperm. He donated to help pay off raising student loans from medical school. Emily wanted a baby and Brad's profile was the best. When Emily is taken to the ER after fainting (where Dr. Brad Winslow works) she repeats his profile while semiconscious after she hears him say his name. Brad wants to know how she knows so many private details about him. He figures out she is carrying his child and she is single, now he wants in his child's life.

Add in a 100 year old time capsule to be opened, finding a body next to it, then it is stolen. As Emily and Brad try to unravel the identify of the body, who and why someone stole the contains of the capsule, I lost that loving feeling....was there any loving feels, nope romance flew out the window when someone climbed through to steal the time capsule.

I ended up skimming the last 6 chapters, even though in the next chapter they were to make love, I was already wanting the book to end.

This is the first book in the Code Red series, I am hoping it gets better and it should because the third book's author is Kathryn Shay, second is Kay David, another favorite of mine.

The second book in April is much better:

FOR THE SAKE OF HIS CHILD (Rated B+)
Bonnie K. Winn
4/2004
Rom/C HS-1199

After tragedy deprives her of the two people she loves most, Brynn Alder decides to leave her old life behind and start over in Texas Hill Country.

Here she'll help troubled kids get their lives in order -- it's the only way she can make sense of everything that's happened to her. But she knows that she'll be able to help only if she doesn't get emotionally involved. Of course, that's before she meets Jake McKenzie and his daughter, Andrea.

Jake wants to be a good father, but he needs Brynn's help. And when circumstances force him to stay at the isolated ranch with Brynn and Andrea, emotions build and refuse to be denied.

***Thoughts

This books starts out with Brynn's husband knowing he is in trouble and should have called the police yesterday....he is then run off the road. Next opens with Brynn out in the Texas hill country. Which by the way is very beautiful and accurately described by the author.
Brynn helps trouble teenagers away from parents, peers, modern day toys, and life's pressures. We know at the beginning Brynn has a daughter but we have to get into the story a bit to find out what has happened.

Brynn has just worked with a very difficult teenager and is ready for a long rest between patients. Jake comes knocking at her door, which puts Brynn into a panic because she is hiding in the hill country and no one is suppose to know her whereabouts.

Jake's daughter, Andrea is slowly dying and Jake doesn't take no for answer when Brynn tells him she can't take his daughter now, maybe later. Andrea's parents didn't have a marriage, her mother had no maternal instincts and her dad was always out of the country on business. When her mother is killed Andrea stops eating. Now Jake needs Brynn's help.

The story is interesting as Brynn brings Andrea out of her shell and teaches Jake how to be a father. But there are some man guys out there after Brynn or something she has so Jake goes into protective mode.

The book never drags, carries the reader swiftly from page 1 to page 298 in a blink of an eye.

So I am half way.....one very good and one not so good.

Friday, April 09, 2004

Did not have a great reading week. I just couldn't get into sitting down and reading...

I read 2 books this week. Had a slow week, the best had to be Williams book.

BEHOLDEN (Rated B-)
Bronwyn Williams
9/1998
Rom/H-Victorian
In the 1890s, a young Irish woman flees her poverty-stricken homeland for North Carolina in a last desperate chance at happiness, to find the man for whom her father sacrificed his life. But once found, the devastatingly handsome man is not the fatherly figure she imagined.

Now she must find the strength to survive on her own in a new land without succumbing to her irresistible desire for a man who has sworn never to love again.

**** Thoughts
The book drags a bit and Katie tends to be a bit too headstrong.....she does a few TSTL things to show her independent. Galen thinks he is too old for her, 11 years! That is about right in a romance book. Tara gets bratty when she doesn't get her own way.....hummm, may have to rethink that B-!!

MIDWIFE IN NEED (Rated C)
Fiona McArthur
9/2003
Rom/C
A VERY SPECIAL WOMAN

Midwife Abbey Wilson lives for her job and her family. After a scarring break-up with her fiancé she has stayed well clear of men. But when Dr. Rohan Roberts arrives at the maternity clinic in Gladstone, New South Wales, Abbey becomes aware of a man for the first time in years.

Abbey arouses Rohan's desires and all his protective instincts though her strong family ties, and collection of waifs and strays, hold too many painful memories for him. Despite himself, Rohan discovers his feelings for Abbey are far deeper than he's bargained for. He has two choices -- he can run, or he can stay and find the courage to admit his love for this very special woman.

***Thoughts
Rohan's mother was killed by being a good Samaritan, it tries to stop Abbey from being the same. Rohan gets a bitirritatingg trying to protect her or angry when she protects herself from hurm when he thinks he should have been there. The romance takes a back seat to the secondary characters.

I am going to be cleaning off the sun porch and rearranging my TBB pile so something should jump out at me.

Read a very good book yesterday, started it around noon and finished about 9:00PM. It was my first Debra Mullin's book, THREE NIGHTS...

Blurb:
Three Nights...
Avon
ISBN: 0060561661
March 2004
Three Nights of Passion...
With a turn of the cards, her father is ruined--and innocent Aveline Stoddard is lost. To honor the gambling debt, she agrees to submit herself for three nights to Lucien DuFeron's every desire, three nights of blistering sensuality and unparalleled ecstasy in the arms of the dashing, dark rogue they call "Lucifer." But the time passes all too quickly...and when the debt is paid, the handsome devil vanishes.

An eternity of desire
Treachery delivered Lucien into the hands of evil brigands. Now five years after his abduction and imprisonment he has returned to London, searching for the enemy responsible--and finding instead the beauty who still haunts his dreams. Aveline has grown more alluring since those unforgettable nights when she melted beneath his touch. Yet Lucien's need for vengeance *must* be satisfied. If the trail leads to someone close to Aveline, will it destroy forever the one love powerful enough to free his tormented heart?
http://www.debramullins.com/three_nights.html

My Thoughts:
Lucien is convinced Aveline's father put him on a ship where he lived in hell for five years. Aveline is convinced her father is innocent but they can't question him because he is in a vegetated state.

What I liked about the book is they talked....they worked out solutions to who had separated them.
I enjoyed Lucien learning to play with his young daughter, Chole. When he found out she had tea parties he thought he should stop them because in his childhood his father didn't allow playing. Aveline and Chloe taught him how to play.

Ms. Mullin's kept me confused to who the culprit was till the last few chapters, she kept give clues and then they turn out not to be a clue. Good work. I rated THREE NIGHTS... B+ Hot

Thursday, April 01, 2004

I finished read COLD FEET by Brenda Novak, rated it a B. It was very interesting to see what happens to a family when a father is suspected of being a serial killer.

The story is a year after his death by suicide when his daughter finds evidence in the crawl space of his house. Should she turn it over to the police and start it all over again? Should she destroy it? She had just recently divorced and this is all her ex-husband needs to get full custody of their daughter. During the years her father was accused she and her mother stood by his side shouting his innocence, now she isn't so sure.

The romance is a bit sparse but the story is riveting. I didn't figure out who the killer was till the last few chapters. I highly recommend COLD FEET.

Not sure what to read next, maybe Three Nights by Debra Mullins.
